IPS Officer Eligibility:

Nationality –Must be an Indian citizen.

Educational Qualification – Degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized university. Students who appeared for their final exams are also qualified to apply for the preliminary exam; however, at the moment of the main exams, they should hold the degree. M.B.B.S graduates who have not completed their internship can also appear for the examination.

Age limit – Must have attained 21 years of age and should not exceed beyond 32 years of age. Also, restriction in a number of attempts and age relaxation exists for different categories.

How to Apply for UPSC IPS Exam:

Candidates are required to go to the official website, and fill the online application form after reading the instructions carefully. 

Candidates should have any of the following photo ID namely Aadhaar card, Voter card, PAN card, Passport, Driving license or other photo ID card issued by the State or Central Government of India.

The scanned copy of the photo ID must be uploaded which will be used for further references.

UPSC IPS Exam Pattern

 

The IPS examination is conducted in three stages.

Stage 1: Preliminary examination

Stage 2: Main examinations

Stage 3: Personal Interview

 

IPS Preliminary Examination:

The preliminary examination consists of two compulsory papers - General studies paper 1 and General studies paper 2 (also known as CSAT) with 200 marks each containing objective type questions. The marks obtained in the prelims are not included in the final selection list as it is meant to screen candidates for the main examination.

IPS Main Examination:

The main examination consists of 9 papers (7 merit-based paper and two qualifying language papers) of total 1750 marks.  The IPS main examination is subjective paper and takes place over a period of 5-7 days.

IPS Interview/ Personality Test:

An e-Summon will be sent to all the candidates who have cleared IPS mains, to appear for IPS interview/ personality test with UPSC board members. The candidates will be tested on their mental ability by discussing their personal interest, hobbies, and testing their general knowledge, current events and situation questions. The personal interview will take place only in UPSC Bhavan in New Delhi
