IAS Eligibility

Nationality – The candidate must hold Indian citizenship.

Educational qualification - The candidate must hold a graduation or equivalent qualification from a recognized university. Students who have appeared for their final examinations are also eligible to apply for the preliminary examination; however, they should hold the degree at the time of main examinations. M.B.B.S graduates who have not completed their internship can also appear for the examination.

Age limit – The candidate must have completed 21 years of age and should not exceed 32 years of age at the time of examination. Also, there is a restriction on the number of attempts. However, relaxation is provided for different categories.

Physical Standards:

The candidate must be physically and mentally fit for the effective discharge of duties and responsibilities of civil services.

Candidates must hold any of the following photo ID namely Aadhaar card, voter card, PAN card, Passport, Driving license or other photo ID card issued by the State or Central Government of India.

IAS Exam Pattern

The IAS examination is conducted in three stages.

  • Stage 1: Preliminary examination - June 2, 2019 (completed)
  • Stage 2: Main examinations - September 20-29, 2019.
  • Stage 3: Personal Interview - February 2020

IAS Preliminary Examination:

The preliminary examination consists of two compulsory papers - General studies paper 1 and General studies paper 2 (also known as CSAT) with 200 marks each containing objective type questions. The marks obtained in the prelims are not included in the final selection list as it is meant to screen candidates for the main examination.

IAS Main examination:

The main examination consists of 9 papers (7 merit-based paper and two qualifying language papers) of total 1750 marks. The IAS mains is subjective paper and takes place over a period of 5-7 days.

Paper-A is not mandatory for the candidates from Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim, and candidates with hearing disability if they prove that they have been freed from such second or third language courses by their respective board or university.

IAS interview/ Personality test:

The candidates who have cleared IAS mains will be sent an e-Summon to appear for IAS interview/ personality test with UPSC board members. The candidates will be questioned on their personal interest, hobbies, general knowledge, current events and situation questions to assess if they are fit for IAS. The personal interview will be held only in UPSC Bhavan in New Delhi.
